An old Mumbai place-name
Poisar was not coined for software. Historical and current government records preserve Poisar as a village in Borivali taluka, within Mumbai Suburban district.
About the name
Poisar takes its name from the Poisar River: an old Mumbai place-name, a living waterway, and an honest metaphor for finding signal in difficult conditions.
The origin story
Poisar was not coined for software. Historical and current government records preserve Poisar as a village in Borivali taluka, within Mumbai Suburban district.
The river rises inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Urban growth, sewage, industrial discharge, and waste later left it heavily polluted and made its renewal a civic project.
We use the name with respect: face a complicated stream honestly, separate signal from noise, and put guardrails between an insight and an action.
The documented line
A late-sixteenth-century account reproduced by the Bombay Presidency Gazetteer uses “Ponçar,” identified there as probably Poisar. It is an early trace, not a proven etymology.
The Thana Gazetteer lists Poisar among the villages of the Goregaon estate. Modern government records continue to identify Poisar as a village in Borivali taluka.
BMC records describe the river beginning inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, crossing Mumbai's northern neighbourhoods, and meeting Malad Creek.
The product takes the river's name as a reminder to find clear, defensible signals inside a difficult flow of information—and to guard what happens next.
Why Poisar
Pollution is a chapter in the river's history, not its identity. The product borrows the name as a commitment to clarity, restraint, and renewal—not as a joke at the river's expense.

The record does not establish the word's literal meaning or whether the river named the village or the village named the river. We keep that uncertainty visible instead of turning it into folklore.
